When I started building systems the optical drive would read and playback CD’s. Then along came the CD recording drives, then drives that could playback DVD’s came along quickly followed by optical drives that could write DVD’s. So now you can get one drive that will read and write DVD’s and CD’s.
Again most of the newer ones are SATA rather than the older IDE. These devices are amazingly cheap and there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of difference between many of them LG and Lite-On are a couple of popular manufactures. I’ve had drives from both of them in the past and they have both proved to be excellent both in performance and price.
